Other industries that they could potentially enter - telecommunications, aircraft building, electricity?

Yes, I alluded to this earlier. See Message 12975320

I believe you are correct as to how ORCL will make money from these exchanges. They will own the exchanges in part with other shareholders as these exchanges are established as business entities & incorporate. AutoExchange, as presently constituted is owned by Ford & ORCL. Now there will be a stock swap, whereby GM & CMRC will also become shareholders.

Oversimplified, AutoExchange will charge a fee against each transaction consummated over the Exchange. There is also likely to be a membership fee which grants sellers the right the offer for sale their wares on the exchange & buyers the right to bid for such wares. I think each exchange will have a similar economic model, but tailored to the customs & practices of the particular industry.

What I think we are witnessing here is the beginning of a fundamental change of how software companies will look to revenues in the future. They are slowly transforming themselves from providers of solutions through software to joint owners e-commerce "real-estate." IMHO, we are beginning to see glimpse of another of Ellison's visions of the future, & it ain't merely selling software; its owning a significant stake in the e-businesses that will need it. JMO.

Actually, a database is absolutely required. Amazon operates running a huge database....this one would be even bigger. As a result, ORCL's software is central. On top of that, I'm sure they will be getting a cut from maintenance and operation of the exchange.
