Mitsubishi says Intel tie-up report speculation

TOKYO, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Leading Japanese electronic equipment maker Mitsubishi
Electric Corp said on Monday a report that it was planning an alliance with Intel Corp
(NasdaqNM:INTC - news), the world's largest chip maker, was just speculation.

A spokesman for Mitsubishi Electric declined to comment further.

Nobuyuki Denda, president of Intel K.K. -- a Japanese subsidiary of Intel Corp -- declined to comment on the report during a
news conference on strategy in the cellular phone market.

Japanese financial daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun said on Saturday that Mitsubishi Electric and Intel were planning a technology
alliance for the next generation of cellular phones.

The report said Mitsubishi would provide Intel with its technology for linking cellular phones and base stations. The U.S. giant
would supply Mitsubishi Electric with its microprocessors and other chips.

The report pushed up Mitsubishi's shares by 83 yen or 9.58 percent to 949 yen by 0506 GMT.
