bryan, maybe you are still missing the point, or maybe I'm just crazy.

I'll try to explain it one last time.

In terms of the SubjectMarks page, it does, in fact, work as you suggested, i.e. downloads Subjectmarks w/new messages first

Okay, maybe it does load first. but threads with new messages DO NOT APPEAR until the full page loads. That's the fact.

Is that clear enough?

I'm not gonna' continue this dialogue any further. It is just a waste of my time and yours if you will not address the initial situation. Word it how ever you want, but it's NOT the same.

And yes, you and I have exchanged some very pleasant PMs, and I apologize for coming across ruthless last night, but I still stand by everything I said. Perhaps if, today I were to rewrite them, I'd be more polite in my wording.

P.S. I don't mean to pound the heck out of the GNET/SI site solely on the issue discussed above, there are many, many other short comings in the new site. It's like you guys took a shot gun to a bucket and riddled it with holes.

As crude(some call it that, I call it efficient) as the *original* SI was/is, at least it held water.

Bryan and August,

I now realize that I initially misunderstood August's complaint about SubjectMark loading. I'm not sure what the term for it is, but Classic SI formatted and displayed the data gradually as it came in. Here's the advantage: If you bookmark a lot of inactive threads, you get to quickly see which ones have new messages, even while the others are still loading.

The new SI waits until all the data is downloaded to your PC, and then displays the page. If you're on a slow line it takes forever before you see ANYTHING. I'm not sure if there's a reason why the New SI works differently, but I've also noticed this condition at other sites. You might ask your engineers if there is a reason for this. I suspect that it involves a design tradeoff between various pros and cons. Whatever the reason, this is part of why I upgraded to a cable modem. It vastly improved my download performance.

If your engineers say it's impractical to switch back to the gradual download, then it would be good to consider segmenting the download. Duncan Moyer's suggestion would work fine for August, but might inconvenience people like me with fast access who usually want to see ALL of the subjects. However you handle it, I hope you accommodate both types of users. Perhaps it can be handled by another option under customization.

Regards,
Greg
