Rs 4,000 crore ($870 mil) Videocon group today announced its foray into a host of net-enabled consumer electronic products.

The company kicked off with V-Net, a net cruiser with built-in VCD player which can be attached to any conventional colour television and comes with an in-built 56K V.90 high-speed modem. When connected to a standard telephone line, and TV display, it can surf the Net, negating the need for a computer.

The V-Net enables the user to send and receive e-mail, also allowing off-line drafting of e-mail to save on internet time. Priced at Rs 4,900, V-Net comes with 25 hours of free internet time and as a part of its introductory offer, the company has decided to give five VCDs and five audio CDs at Rs 1,000.

According to Venugopal Dhoot, chairman and managing director of Videocon International, the company expects this product to rope in significant volumes within the first two months of the launch.

While the company will initially distribute the product, plans are on to float a separate company with technological and financial tie-up with its Silicon Valley-based collaborator.

Nabankur Gupta, director of Videocon International, said that the borders between entertainment, communication and information will disappear with the availability of this product. "We are the first Indian company to adapt to this global trend and offer such integrated technology to the consumers," he said.
