Sun Micro's Practical Joke on Microsoft Exterminated, NYT Says

San Francisco, Feb. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Sun Microsystems Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Scott McNealy had planned to play a practical joke on Microsoft Corp., although pest-control company Western Exterminator Co. thwarted the attempt, the New York Times reported. McNealy hired 20 bright yellow Western Exterminator trucks to circle a San Francisco building where Microsoft was to unveil its Windows 2000 operating system, to call attention to a report that said there were 63,000 bugs in the program. A Western Exterminator manager called off the prank when he learned Sun Micro had hired the trucks and not Microsoft, saying, ``(Gates) could buy (Western) and close it,' while Sun Micro spokeswoman Susanne Vagadori said it would've been an ``appropriate and amusing joke on Microsoft,' the paper said.
