Then why did he get 70% of the vote his second time around? He's won 2 elections by resounding margins. You don't do that without support from blacks and Spanish speaking people, who are mostly Catholic, btw.

I agree, W's much touted "record" on education was achieved mainly by lowering the bar far enough by implementing sub-par tests (that teachers now spend most of their time now trying to get their kids to pass, instead of really teaching) so that he can show good results, imo. He is not leadership material. I would even go so far as to say I would rather have a good politician, with his wits about him, than an honest dolt. This is not to imply that W is honest. They are all a pack of backstabbing manipulative schnooks, it's the nature of the game. That's what it takes to succeed in politics today. The root of the problem lies in money and in the entrenched power systems in Congress and in the Senate. I sincerely wish Powell would have run, but I'm sure he realizes exactly how sh*tty of a job it really is. A good question to ask as far as W is concerned is would he even be on the ballot if he wasn't George Sr.'s son.
