A UN peacekeeping force is by definition a multinational entity requiring a unified command and control structure. There is a fundamental difference between US troops operating unilaterally or as part of a US force operating under UN sanction (as in Iraq) and US troops that join a peacekeeping force. If we join a peacekeeping force we have to play by the same rules as any other participant; if we don't want to do this we don't have to join.

Is there a point where the allegance becomes blurred.

The point would come when the UN began compelling countries to provide peacekeeping troops, which does not look likely. As long as we participate by choice I don't see any likelihood of blurred allegiance.

Or like many would you refuse to consider such a possibility until there is no longer a choice.

Are you worried that someday the UN will order US troops - or troops of any country - to act against their own homelands, and that the troops would actually comply?

That sounds very, very farfetched.

The chief objection of many UN members, is that the UN has been serving as a tool of the US. Bush was clever to get other countries to contribute troops and money (which we were too broke to give -- we still stiff the UN budget). Similarly, Clinton brilliantly got the UN to provide the aegis for NATO to cream the Serbs in Bosnia and Kossovo. The US gets its way by pushing the UN around and doesn't even pay its bills. That Jesse is a brilliant man!
