I agree with your suggestions about the message lists,
except for increasing the font size which would seem
to complicate getting everything on 1 line.

Reducing the length of the date would be a simple
change: 

        from ... Feb 29 2000 6:44 AM
          to ... 02-29-00 6:44a


That change along with truncating the message text and
extra-long member names (following by "..." to indicate
truncation) and eliminating the stripes are relatively
easy changes that would gives us a much more readable
list and get us back to the simplicity of Classic.

I disagree with one of your suggested changes, reducing the message text displayed would make it harder to pick out messages you want to read from the message list.

2) Use only one line for each message. Reduce the length of the text string extract, and/or truncate the person's name, and/or abbreviate the date. Eliminate the inconsistent wrapping that sometimes spreads these fields across two or three lines.
