As an example of how difficult it is to tell from G* "official" communications what the roll out status really is, I note with some bemusement that yesterday's announcements from G* USA stated that service was "available" in 21 countries while G* Canada's PR said 17!

I'd propose another contest for the coming weekend to "name the countries" but I really have no idea the correct answer.

I wonder who does know?

Service Rollout Status

Time for the fifth monthly Service Rollout Report

Because it's not clear what Globalstar means, exactly, by "soft" rollout, friendly user tests, limited commercial service, full commercial service, etc, I've been tracking the rollout of service according to the following definition: "in service" means that an unaffiliated person may purchase and/or legally use the phone in at least parts of the country listed and get service from the GW listed. This means essentially that at least part of the country has to be within range of a known-to-be-operating GW and the country must have licensed the service.

By "country" I use same format as the 65 listed on the GLP home site as starting service by April 2000. And include places like Gibraltar, San Marino and Vatican City.

By the above standards I estimate GWs and countries in service as shown below

M/E, GWs, Countries
11/30, 2, 10
12/31, 5, 29
1/31, 8, 33
2/29, 12, 47
3/31, 15, 53

Gateways added since last report:

Location, Reference
Nicaragua, G* Americas Website
South Africa, G* IR E-mail
Australia (Dubbo), Vod PR 3/30

It has to be noted that G* service is not licensed in South Africa, although the Gateway could serve neighboring countries, and G* IR has indicated it is providing billable service.

Countries added since last report:

Country, Reference
El Salvador, G*Americas Website
Guatemala, GLP Web site
Nicaragua, GLP Web site
Andorra, GLP Web site
Morocco, Licensed, per TESAM PR
Australia, Vod PR

A number of the 65 countries listed on GLP web page as having "coverage" by April 2000, are apparently not yet in service, including Russia, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Ukraine as well as some countries in Central America and Northern Europe.

On the other hand, there's reason to believe service may be possible in several countries not listed among the 65, including Yugoslavia, Macedonia, Hungary, Bosnia, Egypt, Columbia, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and the French Caribbean

I've found web-published tariffs for only seven countries: Italy, Austria, Brazil, Canada, US, Mexico and Australia, URLs for others will be greatly appreciated along with any other updates and comments on the above list, which I'll continue to update monthly.
