QCOM--Chinese military expands mobile networks By CBS MarketWatch in London Last Update: 4:14 AM ET Mar 2, 2000 NewsWatch BEIJING (CBS.MW) -- China's military is expanding its mobile-phone networks. In recent months it's built new cell-phone networks in three provinces and significantly expanded two of the four networks it already operates. Executives involved in the deals say the People's Liberation Army ventures lack operating licenses and government approval, but have been aided by foreign firms that have signed contracts to supply the military with equipment, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. The new networks increase the army's chances of becoming China's third mobile-phone operator. It's already has outpaced its main rival in introducing wireless technology to China. The army's networks use a standard called CDMA, or code division multiple access, which was supposed to be deployed by another company, China United Telecommunications Corp., or China Unicom. Last month, China Unicom signed an agreement with San Diego-based Qualcomm Corp. (QCOM: news, msgs) to license its CDMA technology. Since then, the government has ordered China Unicom not to deploy the CDMA network. But the order doesn't seem to apply to the military, whose new networks already are up and running.
