Joe - Re: "They sell HUGE 64 BIT SERVERS for well over $100,000 a piece! Have you made any budget proposals lately? Suppose you have 2 of these machines as Plan A, and 6 of them as Plan B, doing pretty much the same thing. Guess which one will be selected?"

Thanks for the perfect lead in !!

Answer - NEITHER !!!!

The equivalent Intel Merced Server will cost 1/2 to 1/3 that of a Sun server !!!!

THE INTEL MERCED SERVER WILL BE SELECTED

In your AMDroid jargon - Merced will be the PRICE and PERFORMANCE LEADER !!!!

You keep alibi-ing that 64 bit CPUs aren't needed - and if they ARE needed, only an AMD 64 bitter will do.

Will, Jozeph, I hate to be the one to BREAK THE BAD NEWS to you - AMD AIN'T GOT NO 64 BIT CPU !!!!

Intel has one - ITanium/Merced - and IT WORKS !!!

And the second generation - McKinley - will SHIP before AMD ever gets its FIRST 64 bit SludgeHumper !!

Accept it - Intel is AHEAD - WAY AHEAD !!!

You may not like it - and even DENY IT - but that's YOUR PROBLEM !
