Reality check...from Andrew Seybold's Wireless Roadmap Site:

The myth of GPRS is that it is a 144 Kbps packet data technology. The real story is that GPRS being implemented in three phases where the highest data rate is 57.6 Kbps transmit and receive. Adding both the transmit and receive speeds together provide the 144 Kbps rating (57.6 x 2 = 144 Kbps). In Phase 1 GPRS the data rate is 9.6Kbps send and 19.2 Kbps receive. Phase 2 increases the receive speed to38.4 Kbps while the send speed remains at 9.6 Kbps. Phase 1 and 2 provide little advantage over today's 9.6 Kbps circuit-switched services for applications that require sending significant information from the mobile computer.
