Kash,

AMD Athlon stormed during Q1 says channel

Sales of AMD's Athlon have gone through the roof in Q1 of this year, channel players confirmed today. Steve Clark, marketing director of Microtronica Europe, said sales of the processor, particularly during February, were very strong, accounting for a large percentile rise in microprocessor sales. Microtronica, like AVNet, sells microprocessors from both Intel and AMD.

Kash,

<This launch is mindboggling.>

I totally agree

<Either the new mask/fab rev is yielding several speed grades higher or they just committed hari-kiri.>

Even if they are yielding several higher speed grades I fail to see how jumping ahead three to four grades in one release benefits them at all (except for the GHz PR)

<Seems to me they are calling AMDs bluff on yields and speed grades.>

I don't think they are bluffing.

<I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they have seen some real improvements.>

Maybe you are right, we will see. But I think AMD can match what Intel does or does not have, that's JMHO.

Thanks,

Epinephrine

Kash, <if they launch the 850/866/933 with decent volumes>

Seriously, if a custom mobo is required for their 1GHz system do you think Intel have a 933 that will currently run on a standard mobo? And if not, what kind of volume of these custom mobos do you think Intel has lined up to meet the demand?

I think we will see the Intel "collectors edition" 1GHz processor/mobo/heat sink offering priced way above a mass market price.

Kash - Re: "Either the new mask/fab rev is yielding several speed grades higher or they just committed hari-kiri."

The 1 GHz Coppermines are yielding due to incremental improvements in process and transistor sizing/adjusting.

The "new mask set" represents improvements BEYOND what the cuurent 1 GHz Coppermine is - and will be separate and distinct from next week's launch.

Look for improved speed & power from the "new mask set" at a later date.
