<<Their system is up and running, it is quite likely that someone is going to operate it. >>

The likely hood is nil. McCaw was the last real hope other than perhaps Bill Gate$, who would not miss $200M to launch a few more sats and several $M per month to fund the gateways to keep the system open. Remember, the system as it now stands (flys?) is in sore need of repair.

I understand what you're saying, John. I just think I* is a dead bat, the only question is when. I tend to think sooner rather than later.

RS's post re: I* licenses and infrastructure having value to G* got me to wondering about other assets of I* that might have value to G*. Jim has contended all along that what McCaw wanted from I* was spectrum, so I began wondering if additional spectrum had value to G*.

What makes that particularly interesting to me is QCOM's HDR, which I understand to require additional dedicated band width. I'm wondering if that additional band width from I*, coupled with HDR, could upgrade the current constellation to high speed data. If so, that could put a real crimp in Teledesic, and to a lesser extent, ICO.

Now if you tell me that handling I*'s spectrum requires new G* satellites, then forget I mentioned it. But if existing G* satellites can handle it, it seems like a quantum upgrade. Am I way off base here (if so, please keep chuckles to a dull roar <g>), or does I* spectrum have real current value to G*?
