Rob, you forgot to include the paragraph immediately following Sun's quote about Merced being a "development platform":

But Sun probably shouldn't be pointing fingers. The current UltraSparc II was due to be replaced by the UltraSparc III "Cheetah" in late 1999, according to Sun's chip road map. Though the first UltrasSparc IIIs are late, Sun will roughly keep up on schedule of speeds, saying the new chip will be available at 750 MHz.

Besides, I'm sure Sun knows that Itanium is targeting UltraSparc III, so their negative comments are to be expected. Personally, I would have preferred a warmer relationship between Sun and Intel, but maybe it just wasn't meant to be.

Rob - Re: "Sun really can't do much with it... the delays killed
any idea of throwing their weight behind it. Besides,
Sun has the 100 processor follow-on to the VERY successful
UE10000 waiting in the wings. Sure ain't running an
Itanium processor. Why should they? No one can
answer that question. Help us out."

I guess Sun is fully committed to the Alpha EV6789123...

By the way - SUN's 100 Processor system was supposed to be a 1000 processor system based on the UltraSparc III.

The UltraSparc III was due in mid 1998. It still doesn't work - and is TWO YEARS LATE !!!!

So TOOT your horn on that one - SUN looks as bad as Compaq/Alpha123456789.

Look for SUN and ITanium to become "a couple".

By the way - please list the new Alpha Design Wins - outside of Compaq.
