then don't forget the preferred method is turn off the power first before installing and removing adapter cards

I'd probably word it a bit stronger. With very few exceptions, you should never install or remove cards, plugs,
RAM, CPU's, IDE cables, or really anything with the power on.

An exception would be USB, and from time to time I will do it with serial and parallel cords with the power on.

Bottom line is that if you are going to do this, be prepared to replace components.
