McCain stands for nothing other than himself, that's why the libs like him and the conservatives reject him.

Safire did not support CLinton's impeachment for his perjury. He wanted Clinton impeached and removed for different reasons: over Clinton's and AlGore's illegal sale of tech for campaign money from China and their illegal use of FBI files and secret police to derail opposition.

But with a partisan bloc so tight as the Senate Dems, there was little chance Clinton could ever be impeached and removed, no matter how solid the evidence.

Safire and the Weekly Standard crowd like McCain because of his aggressive and adventurous foreign policy ideas. Also, McCain would be beholden to them if he were elected.

Bush would be a little more circumspect in sending troops overseas.
