I'll need to give you a bit of background on AT&T/LU to explain the organization. Before trivestiture in 1995, Network Systems was the manufacturing arm of AT&T. Way back when it was called Western Electric and it made the phones. At trivestiture Rich McGinn was president of Network Systems and became CEO of Lucent. The Bell Labs location in Murray Hill NJ also became Lucent headquarters.
As I said, just before trivestiture a new complex was completed (originally for Network Systems, then for Lucent people) in Warren. The idea was to consolidate as many administrative/sales people in one place as possible, as AT&T and Lucent had (and still have) many offices scattered across NJ.
Now. Why would Lightpath want an office in Warren? IMO, to keep in touch with the top LU brass. LU is very much a "face-time" company. Also, the admin people make the decisions, not the manufacturing folks. In Warren, you are 10-15 minutes away from Rich McGinn, and also near to people like Gerry Butters, LU's "optical networking guru" (at least that's what LU's website calls him).
I have a couple of phone calls out to try to verify just where LU manufactures its optical equipment. In addition to Andover MA, and Norcross GA (thanks Julie) I believe there are also manufacturing sites near Denver and Allentown, PA.
Hope to get some answers this afternoon.
