Steve,

press is going to go mad comparing AMD and Intel systems. With Rambus support and vastly superior cache technology, Intel based systems will blitz those tests.

I think you are giving press too much credit. Here is just about the only test they are capable of performing:

1,000 MHz > 800 MHz

Steve,

Dell is expected to start shipping the first Intel based 1 GHz systems on Wednesday this week.

Intel was expected to release 850 and 866 MHz systems last week, and 1 GHz systems ahead of AMD. Sometimes things just don't work out the way you expect.

Steve - RE: "I don't know where the reports of AMD winning the GHz war have come from. AMD have not launched their chips today, they have announced that they will be shipping to OEMs. Intel has been doing this for some time.

Compaq will ship the very first 1 GHz AMD systems to customers part way thru next week."

Gateway is quoting March 13 as delivery date on Gateway Select 1GHz Athlon systems.

I thought (and here's everyone's chance to correct my and anyone else's misinformation) that RDRAM's addition to system speed was relatively small. The only resource I could find on the question was at Tom's Hardware, and it was an old article.

What's the real deal with RDRAM vs. SDRAM on, say, an 800 MHz CuMine?

TIA, and let's see Intel at 200 in 2001.

Randy

Steve - re: Compaq will ship the very first 1 GHz AMD systems to customers part way thru next week
Looks to me like they will be shipping Thursday March 9 which is day after tomorrow... DELL has not shown availability but for sure will be days or weeks on shipment at a minimum - they just got below 30 days on 800MHz PIII and initial shipments were 45 days... CPQ has had the 1 gig Athlon samples for months, with production parts in manufacturing for several weeks, according to a CPQ spokesperson. now how many might be a good question - 2 samples, 1 production??? still..

I think this is kind of a tempest in a teapot until we see what performance of these machines is like. But the notion that this is smoke and mirrors on AMD's part just does not fit with CPQ's model for the consumer business, which requires a fairly long supply pipeline... we'll have to see if Intel has also been feeding some OEMs reasonable quantities of 1 GHz parts.
