The data issue is per-minute charges

The wired world is rapidly evolving towards always-on flat-rate net connections. To pay for the huge infrastructure buildout, wireless is still addicted to per-minute charges and that isn't likely to change anytime soon. The result is that all wireless surfing tends to be of the "quick check something and disconnect" variety which is a very different model from that seen in the wired world. Even among non-satellite wireless companies, data is more of a marketing gimmick than a real value proposition at this stage. For satellite services, being higher up the cost curve, this is even more so.

The data capabilities of G* will certainly improve over time but the whole thrust of the service is voice, not data. If voice doesn't sell in volume, investors won't have to worry about data rates 3-4 years out because G* will have folded its tent long before then.

I think it would be disingenuous to suggest that Globalstar intends to provide high speed data at any time in the future. There is no such plan, is there? As to what Globalstar "can" or "could" do, unless the company is working towards that goal, there's no point imagining things.
