New Prosecutor in Yale Homicide Probe

The Associated Press
N E W H A V E N, Conn., March 2 ? A new prosecutor has been assigned to the investigation into the unsolved stabbing death of Yale University senior Suzanne Jovin.

Assistant State?s Attorney James G. Clark has assumed responsibility for the investigation with local police and other investigative agencies, officials said Wednesday.

Jovin, 21, was killed Dec. 4, 1998, suffering 17 stab wounds in the back and neck. Her body was found in the upscale East Rock neighborhood not far from campus.

Neighbors reported hearing shouting, as though a couple were arguing, minutes before the body was discovered, but police say there were no witnesses to the brutal slaying.

The case remains unsolved after 15 months. Police have said they have a ?pool of suspects,? but have publicly named only 39-year-old James Van de Velde, who was Jovin?s thesis adviser at Yale.

Clark will take over the case as Supervisory Assistant State?s Attorney David P. Gold leaves the investigation behind to take a position as a Superior Court judge

The announcement of the change came the same day that the murder case received national attention on ABC?s 20/20. On the show, Van de Velde vehemently asserted his innocence.

Just reading the transcript. Jim says, when asked about the photographs of Suzanne's body that he was shown:

And I could barely recognize her.

Why?
