Zaxbowow - RE: "What I'm concerned about is that Intel priced its 1 Ghz chips at $300 below AMD's."

That $1299 price for 1GHz Athlon doesn't mean anything.

At Gateway's site, the price difference between 850MHz and 1GHz (equipped the same) is $300. According to AMD's official pricing the 850 costs $749 and 1GHz costs $1299 in 1000 unit quantities.

When 1GHz makes it to Pricewatch we will have a better indication of what AMD is selling 1GHz for.

That was a bit strange, but it should mean very little. Intel at most is selling 20K or so of these chips per month, the $300 price drop is not even a rounding error. Probably just a PR move. It may mean more to AMD if it forces them to reduce their prices. I don't think that it will.

Maybe their actual OEM price is above list? The vapor price for the Athlon 1GHz on Pricewatch (ETA...) is above the list price: gray market, price is based on demand and if a desired product is extremely rare, then it will command a premium.

This is price is likely PR since it is not a volume product for which the lost revenues would be significant. Since AMD came out first with a list price number, it provided an opportunity for Intel to appear more competitive. At least for now access to either 1 GHz processor requires a close relationship.

Comment: Another sucker ploy to keep Dell hanging by a thread...Awfully easy to price something you can't ship at below market cost...Question is...Will Dell spend the next 6 months waiting for the Intel 1 Gig to arrive in any meaningful quantity? At some point, Dell has to wise up!

This is a move from Intel the likes of which I have not seen before.

Rumor has it that the special edition chips are edged in gold and autographed by C. Barrett. The price....special to the channel.....$1999.99....a must have.
