Even in the summer the train makes sense unless one is planning to go outside the city. My friend with the house from hell took the train up from DC all the time until the last several trips, when he enlisted the aid of another friend with a flatbed truck to remove the furniture he wanted to keep. Parking in the city can be a misery and garages are expensive. The transit system is quite good and there are always taxis for the times when transit connections are awkward.
