Bittersweet indeed, we're down almost 10%. AMD would be at $65 right now if it won the contract. The symbolic importance of the contract win would have been greater than beating Intel to the release of a 1GHz chip. I could see AMD making the marketing pitch that if MSFT trusted AMD with the chip for such a significant product to its future, why shouldn't corporate IS departments also trust AMD. AMD must have thought they had won the contract, and so did much of the computer industry reporters. This deal is small change for Intel, but could have been huge for AMD and that's why Intel probably chose to undercut AMD at the last moment and offer MSFT a deal it couldn't refuse. That noted, it's back to work for AMD. Let Intel spend valuable resources and fab space on a product that offers it razor thin margins. In the long run, I'd much rather see AMD concentrate all of its resources on crippling Intel at the high end. There is so much room for AMD to grow there.
