I have a question. ST Microelectronics is a customer of Aware. Alcatel is a competitor who is selling to a lot of big names like SBC, etc. Does the following 2 press releases mean Aware is getting some indirect business through ST to Alcatel?

Alcatel and STMicroelectronics Sign Agreement on DSP Core for Communications Applications
Alcatel will build system-on-chip solutions for xDSL, voice-over-IP and other applications based on ST100 DSP/MCU core

Paris and Geneva, February 28, 2000 - Alcatel (NYSE: ALA) and STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) today announced they have entered into an agreement through which Alcatel will adopt the STMicroelectronics ST100 as the preferred Digital Signal Processor (DSP) core for communications applications where a powerful high-end embedded core is required. Alcatel will embed this core in a variety of system-on-chip solutions for digital subscriber line (DSL), Voice-over-Internet Protocol and other leading-edge technologies.

STMicroelectronics' ST100 is a powerful fixed-point DSP core that combines 16-bit instructions for optimal code compactness in control functions, 32-bit instructions for fast microcontroller performance and 128-bit SLIW instruction words for high-end DSP performance. The first implementation of the ST100's highly scalable architecture, the ST100-4W, includes five processing units, delivering up to 200 million MACs per second with a supply of just 1V and up to 600 million MAC per second at 1.8V.

"Alcatel needed a powerful DSP for the various types of communication products that require the integration of complex systems and powerful processors into fewer and fewer chips", commented Johan Danneels, CEO and chairman for Alcatel's microelectronics' activities. "With the ST100 Alcatel will be able to develop high-performance embedded systems as required in GSM, xDSL and VoIP applications. These will enable Alcatel to maintain a leading edge in its core markets." To further cut the design cycle time for such applications, Alcatel is launching a platform-based design initiative around the ST100. Along with an embedded microcontroller the ST100 will be at the core of a design platform to allow rapid re-use of both hardware and software components and quick development of derivative designs. This methodology will enable Alcatel to reduce design time for ST100-based SoCs by one order of magnitude.

"We are very pleased with the choice of Alcatel", remarked Aldo Romano, General Manager of ST's Telecommunication and Peripheral/Automotive Groups, "which highlights the strengths of the ST100 architecture for high performance DSP applications. This new agreement continues and reinforces the long and fruitful co-operation between Alcatel and STMicroelectronics in DSL and other communications segments."

Alcatel and STMicroelectronics to Prepare for Mass Market Interoperable DMT-Based VDSL
Solution will enable digital video and super-high-speed Internet access over standard phone lines

Paris and Geneva, January 31, 2000 - Alcatel (NYSE: ALA) and STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) today announced they are working to deliver interoperable VDSL solutions to the market. The two companies will jointly promote the DMT (Discrete Multi-Tone) modulation technique as a worldwide standard for VDSL at international regulatory level. The use of the DMT modulation technique for VDSL allows full interoperability with ADSL full rate (ANSI and G.dmt) and G.Lite, thus unifying the ADSL and VDSL markets into a single mass market.

VDSL (Very high bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line) allows the transmission of voice, data, video at the same time with speeds up to 60Mb/s on standard existing copper telephone wires. This performance enables a wide variety of services ranging from ultra high-speed Internet access to video on demand.

Alcatel has recently demonstrated the simultaneous transport of a multitude of applications, including digital video distribution, live video streaming, video on demand and super high speed Internet Access over its DMT-VDSL platform. ST and Telia have also recently announced and demonstrated Zipper-VDSL, based on the DMT linecode, that enables full interoperability with existing ADSL and ADSL G.Lite standards. Zipper-VDSL is endorsed by the VDSL Alliance for future adoption as the ITU worldwide standard.

"As an active member of the VDSL Alliance, Alcatel is committed to making DMT-based VDSL a success" said Paul Spruyt, Vice President for the VDSL activities of Alcatel. "The cooperation with ST is another example of the role Alcatel wants to play in VDSL interoperability testing similar to our leading position in ADSL."

"ST's commitment to developing DMT-VDSL chipsets as an active member of the VDSL Alliance, is the natural continuation of the major investment of our company in ADSL chipsets", said Pietro Palella, Wireline Division General Manager of ST's Telecommunication and Peripherals/Automotive Groups. "We are convinced that the joint effort between ST and Alcatel to bring to the market interoperable VDSL solutions gives a further push to high speed consumer connectivity and represents a further step forward in the xDSL technology roadmap."
