Hey, sportsfans: we've got a pennant race between HDR and 1X+: What we know about the NOK (CDMA compatible) plug for MOT's 1XRT+: 1. This article is pure pablum: based on vapor, full of conclusory misinformation and written by some rag's staff journalist whose wireless knowledge is about as up to speed as our own WK. Consider the following:HDR is a Qualcomm solution that competes with Motorola?s 1X Plus. The biggest difference is that HDR requires operators to set aside a whole channel just for data while Motorola?s 1X Plus allows operators to offer data and voice from the same channel. HDR competes with 1X Plus?? Stated as if HDR is the johnnie-come-lately, second tier contestant in this market. And MOT's data plus voice must be superior. 2. Or this: Both Qualcomm and Motorola plan to take their technologies to standards bodies and both have been working with vendors and operators to get support and input. Again, this puts 1X Plus on a par with HDR vis a vis vendors, operators and standards bodies--the two technologies are in a dead heat, folks! The writer does not stop to mention that HDR has conducted two field trials for those very same vendors and operators, leading LU and a slew of 15 others to back the technology (according to Nikkei Shimbum), does not stop to mention actual 2.4Mbps throughput in a mobile environment (more on that in a later post) or that the upgrade/HDR alongside 1Xrt path is well defined in terms of working MSMs and CSMs. And what does MOT have to show? Nothing at the Wireless 2000 Show. As Irwin said at the meeting: via press release you can do anything. It's a landgrab out there. 3. Or this: When you get a company like Nokia teamed up to bring this technology forward, you have a high chance of success,? said Neal Campbell, director of CDMA product marketing for Motorola. That's what this is--marketing with a capital M. As Tigger says, it's what NOK and MOT, and, once upon a time, ERICY, do best. 4. Now, go to MOT's website and tell me if you see a lot of information on 1X Plus. Go also to MOT's website, atmot.com and see if you recognize a familiar magazine name--the very same rag that just hyped 1X Plus--a bit of old buddy network forming, perhaps? Some guys went out and had lunch. 5. I tend to agree with gdichaz: MOT and NOK associating themselves with 1X....+ or - is the sign of things to come. Good things for Q. Steve internettelephony.com Nokia joins 1X Plus camp NANCY GOHRING The battle over how to achieve faster data rates in CDMA networks is beginning to boil. Yesterday, Nokia said it will support Motorola?s new 1X Plus solution, which Motorola first introduced at the Wireless 2000 show last week. Nokia is expected to announce its allegiance some time next week. So far Nokia and Motorola are pitted against Qualcomm and HDR is a Qualcomm solution that competes with Motorola?s 1X When you get a company like Nokia teamed up to bring this technology forward, you have a high chance of success,? said Neal Campbell, director of CDMA product marketing for Motorola. Lucent Technologies, which announced last week that it would work to standardize Qualcomm?s high data rate (HDR) solution. Motorola is encouraged by Nokia?s support. ? Qualcomm is equally encouraged by Lucent?s support. ?We feel strongly about standardizing, and we?re happy to have Lucent supporting us,? said Kim Kleber, director of product marketing, HDR for Qualcomm. Both Qualcomm and Motorola plan to take their technologies to standards bodies and both have been working with vendors and operators to get support and input.
