EMC's McData business announces that it is by far the leading vendor in the fastest growing segment of the Fibre Channel hub and switch market - Director-class switches. The Director-class is not only the fastest growing segment of the market, but it is also expected to be the largest segment of the market overtaking fabric switches in 2001 and reaching over 50% of the entire market in 2003. The Fibre Channel hub and switch market is expected to grow meaningfully to nearly $3 billion in 2003 due to the continuing popularity of Fibre Channel as the current leading choice for flexible, highly available storage networking needs. McData currently supplies EMC with its Connectrix Director and also supplies product to other customers in the marketplace.

McDATA Leads Fastest Growing Market Segment for Storage Area Networks Director switch class product represents over 50 percent of the total revenue by 2003

Broomfield, Colo., March 8, 2000 - In a move to further its dominant position in the enterprise, McDATA© Corporation, a leading Storage Area Network (SAN) infrastructure company, today announced its leadership position in SANs. IDC's newest report 2000 Worldwide Fibre Channel Hub and Switch Market Forecast and Review states that the director switch is the fastest growing segment in terms of revenue.
Director class switches are increasing at a rate faster than all other segments combined - a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 129 percent between 1999 and 2003. In addition, the director class switch will take over fabric switches in 2001, and by 2003, they will account for 52 percent of the market's revenue.

McDATA manufacturers and markets the industry's leading director switch, the ED-5000 Fibre Channel DirectorTM. The high-availability characteristics of the McDATA ED-5000 offers end-users its 99.999 percent availability and makes it the premier choice as the key connectivity component for implementing large-scale SANs, as well as server and storage consolidation. Not only does the ED-5000 Director feature data center-class availability, but it has the necessary scalability for enterprise production environments. McDATA continues to provide the enterprise with a backbone infrastructure solution based on its popular Fibre Channel Director class product.

"We continue to provide integrated, interoperable solutions that build out from the data center or "core" throughout the enterprise," said Jeff Vogel, vice president of McDATA's Marketing and System Integration. "The IDC report underscores McDATA's high-availability strategy and our ability to influence how SANs will be deployed throughout the enterprise."

"The worldwide Fibre Channel hub and switch factory market is red hot. In fact, it is one of the fastest growing of any market that we cover, reaching nearly $2.8 billion by 2003," said John McArthur, vice president of IDC's Worldwide Storage Systems research. "McDATA is at the heart of the fastest growing segment with 99.8 percent of the director class switch segment."

Consolidation Driving Growth

Data becomes inherently more valuable as it is shared and more productive as it is accessible and available - this requires a highly reliable data infrastructure and flexible interconnect scheme to enable on-demand information. Storage and server consolidations are taking place to make the data as accessible as possible, which reduces time to market and increases revenue. As a result, consolidation increases asset utilization and lowers total cost of ownership.

McDATA is delivering solutions today that enable server and storage consolidation that optimizes data utilization and improves overall data protection and security. This approach allows McDATA to ensure end users that they will stay competitive and leverage the opportunities brought on
by the Internet.
