David, as you quite rightly conclude 3Com does have 349 million share outstanding and another 990 million authorized, but would I be far fetched to surmise that the remaining 990 million shares might be used for splitting if the stock exceeds $100 in the near future. I feel if this is the case then 3Com is well positioned to take advantage of the psychology associated with share splitting.

David, Thanks for the response. I'm still nervous about the possibility of 3Com buying one or more companies before the PALM distribution. True, 3Com management will benefit financially by maximizing the PALM/COMS ratio, but they also have a fiduciary responsibility to the company they run. EB has laid out the areas in which he is looking to acquire companies, and he has not said that he will wait until after the COMS distribution (nor, to be fair, has he said he won't).

From my notes taken from a article which someone else provided earlier on this thread, those areas of interest to 3Com are:

o broadband connections
o home networking products
o network telephony
o wireless equipment
o unified messaging deliveries
