The TWSE Index tumbled 6.5 percent to 8815.24, led by Taiwan
Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and the nation's largest
companies, after the government said it will delay the start of
its NT$500 billion ($16.3 billion) market support fund.

Some investors also sold before presidential elections on
Saturday on concern the ruling party may be defeated, upsetting
economic policy and relations with China.
``A growing number of retail investors are worried that the
ruling party may not be able to stay in power,' said Simon Chao,
who manages NT$1.5 billion for President Investment Trust Corp.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, the world's No.1
customized chipmaker, fell 6.7 percent to NT$182. United
Microelectronics Corp., TSMC's closest rival and Taiwan's second
largest chipmaker, fell 6.5 percent to NT$100 and was the most
active share by value traded.
