satellite wireless question :

If I may be naive enough to ask :
under what circumstances would a satellite based wireless telephone be "a need" (rather than "a want") ?

A lot of my work colleagues from Europe, Australia, Japan, visit us in the US, with their standard cellphones, and a SIM card appropriately programmed for use in the US. They have no difficulty making/recieving calls.

Now, a person in the middle of the South Pacific Seas/ Pacific Ocean, may see a desire to have a satellite based wireless phone : how much of the world's population falls into this category ?

Are there other categories of users I have overlooked ?

cheers, kumar
