First I agree with most of the criticisms the author gives to main stream societal commercial exploitation of peoples feelings of inadequacy. Second, I am not sure what speaking for themselves (nudists/naturists) accomplishes, as they are talking about a private subculture. Michael's premise was, why do the clothed people have the say so on the rules in public.

We live in a society where relationships are ordered and fidelity based. Men and women betray their relationships to one another in all sectors of society (clothed or unclothed). My comment was simply that a normal male's first inclinings to get personal with a woman typically has to do with him being attracted to her form. Propped up by wire underlings or bare nekked, the issue is the same. For the male this is problematic, in that we don't start out wanting to screw (literal pun) up. Lot's of harm occurs simply by denying this inclination. I'm willing to point out the problem/responsibility men have as a spokesperson for us. It seems reasonable to ask women to help out here by sharing the responsibility to dress/cover with modest attire. Where women dress provocatively or not at all in public in our society you see lots of disequilibrium.

Why would anybody want to wear a swimsuit while swimming if they had a choice and had experienced the alternative?

Anyone who has brushed up against a jellyfish can answer that question.

I spent some time in my youth at events where nudity was the norm, and I can confirm that when everyone is nude, the sexual excitement of nudity vanishes completely. We adjust very quickly to new norms.
