Then just what was it that Intel licensed to AMD for MMX?

If memory serves, Intel did not license MMX to AMD. AMD filed a lawsuit against Intel. The result of that lawsuit was that AMD was allowed to use the TERM "mmx", on the theory that the term is merely letters of the alphabet and not protectable.

Intel licensed MMX technology to AMD in early 1996.

Intel did not license the MMX trademark to AMD.

The licensing deal was done to promote a SINGLE STANDARD for graphics enhancement.

Clearly, that was successful for one year only, as AMD and Intel developed their own ADDITIONAL extensions to MMX.
