Les,

I quote from the article (emphasis mine):

There are a whole lot of academic papers supporting the theory behind hedonics, and a commission headed by Michael Boskin, a Republican, supports this approach.

The theory actually dates back to the 1930s and an economist named Andrew Court, who was trying to determine if car prices were rising or falling. This was an era when a lot of new auto features were being introduced but also when economy cars started to appear on the scene.

And while there may be academic papers up the wazzoo on this subject, they are really irrelevant. What the CPI is supposed to measure is whether you'll have to spend more one month to the next for the same products -- whether your costs have increased.

And what if the products are not the same because they have additional features?

Well, I guess the author would conclude that to be really irrelevant.

Ah, the joys of making up relevancy rules out of free will. Peer reviewed academic research is such a drag.

And refrigerators. As I need to buy one, I can check out the hedonic qualities of a cold water/ ice cube dispenser on the door and let you know how great I feel. -g-.
