Yahoo, eBay in talks on alliance or merger-CNBC
NEW YORK, March 14 (Reuters) - Internet company Yahoo Inc. (NasdaqNM:YHOO - news) and online auction site eBay Inc. (NasdaqNM:EBAY - news) are in talks regarding a possible alliance or merger, cable network CNBC reported on Tuesday, citing people close to the discussions.

The network said the two companies were discussing various forms of a partnership, although no deal was imminent.

A source close to the talks said there was a 50-50 chance of a ``deep partnership' between eBay and Yahoo, with a ``significantly ' smaller chance that Yahoo would buy eBay outright, CNBC said.

CNBC said people with knowledge of the matter said the talks intensified after the top Internet services company America Online Inc. (NYSE:AOL - news) announced it was buying media giant Time Warner Inc. (NYSE:TWX - news) in January.

Sources said the talks could fall apart at any time.

Shares of eBay were trading at 235 on Instinet in after-hours trade, following its close of 211 on the Nasdaq stock market.

Yahoo's shares were trading at 170 on Island ECN, following its close of 168-3/4 on Nasdaq.

BM--I knew something was pushing this stock but not this merger. Makes sense but I bet MSFT or AOL wants EBAY just as much. Wow were looking at 400+ easy by April. Traders dumping biotech were to go but this.
