I am candidly getting very confused about the use (or misuse) of the word WCDMA or W-CDMA (WCDMA-DS ???).

Heck, I'm always confused, so what's new? <g>

... but at least as it applies to the world of ETSI and 3GPP there IS indeed a specification for the UMTS/IMT-2000 Terrestrial Radio Access System (UTRA) aka UTRA FDD (WCDMA or WCDMA-DS) for IMT-DS. The current specification is UMTS release 99.
