re: "The Boswell Report"

The key words may be: "The Boswell Report examines the dynamics of the marketplace by obtaining information directly from the channel: resellers and suppliers. The research discusses the story behind the reported figures and provides value-added information for the investment decision process. Each month the Allison Boswell researchers contact hundreds of store managers and retail buyers representing thousands of stores in order to measure whether or not a company is meeting management's goals."

Do you suppose that since the Boswell report may not be sensitive to events in the "direct channel", ie companies like Gateway, in which AMD may be enjoying a more significant presence (try turning on your TV for some of Gateway's latest commercials or call them up to see just what they seem to be moving at delL's expense) that AMD just might be selling some processors that the Boswell report is simply not picking up? I guess that we will have to wait until mid April for the real truth, whatever that is. Unless, of course, AMD does a "pre announce."

Despite all of the past evidence, I do not yet have a high confidence level, yet, in AMD's capacity to be as stupid as this report would suggest.

Regards,

DARBES

The Boswell Report: AMD Performs Poorly, INTC to DominatePRICE C
3/14/0 13:31 (New York)

Petz,

This report is odd considering that AMD had an inventory of 200-300 k at the end of the year. If production was so poor, why it that that the inventory downdraft is only 22%......you would expect that percentage to be much higher. In February AMD was reported taking back market share in January retail pc sales and Sanders reported that AMD was calling for a better than expected quarter. In 30 days things changed that quickly? I doubt it.....I don't think Sanders would have made his comments if he couldn't see to the end of the quarter. We know he doesn't want to risk shareholders lawsuits. Besides AMD is calling for a 1 billion $ quarter.

Are you sure this report was not commissioned by Intel? It seems the data may be faulty.

Petz,

<Allison Boswell Consulting, Inc. writes, "February marks AMD's worst performance in five months, as their struggle to be first to market with each new clock speed has resulted in inadequate production to meet demand. It appears INTC has shrewdly balanced its business from low-end through high-
end, while effectively putting a squeeze on AMD, as the company's unit sales have declined 27.0% sequentially. Year-over-year AMD unit sales have declined 38.7% and year-over-year market share decreased 630bps in unit share and 190bps in volume share. In addition, AMD's inventory is down 22.0% and ASP is flat." s Full Report dated February 29, 2000 from The Boswell Report.>

Looks like this guy is jumping to wrong conclusions based on flawed data.

What is happening in the market is that major PC OEMs like Compaq, HP are increasingly going direct. Gaeway and IBM are 100% direct. That leaves EMachines too gain share on the ever shrinking retail pie. Since AMD didn't have any business with Emachines in the last few months, it may appear that Intel is gaining ground but the reality is quite the opposite.
I find this Boswell guy's analytical skills totally questionable.
