Helmerich & Payne, Inc. Announces New Rig Construction

TULSA, Okla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- March 15, 2000--Helmerich & Payne, Inc. (NYSE:HP), announced today that it had placed an order for four new land rigs, 8-18,000' depth capacity, and an option for an additional four new land rigs.

The Company expects to take delivery of the new, highly mobile, SCR electric rigs in fiscal 2001, with the first rigs expected to commence operations in H&P's first quarter. H&P will use major equipment components from IRI International, Inc. The rigs are expected to cost approximately $7.5 million each.

Hans Helmerich, President and CEO, commented, "Our industry needs newer rigs that utilize technology more effectively in offering operators the best opportunity to achieve the lowest total well cost. With the steady improvement in the outlook for natural gas, the medium well depth market of 8-18,000' offers a unique opportunity to add new, more productive rigs."

H&P added six new, mobile rigs in 1998/1999, and confirmed its rig design's capability to reduce the total cost of customers' wells. The new rig order using H&P design innovations will allow faster moves between wells, include the latest instrumentation, and provide an H&P-patented mud system and other work-friendly enhancements. The flexibility of the rig design and capability also makes the new rigs attractive for international operations.

H&P's mobile rigs have been strong performers in both up and down markets. H&P presently has 15 mobile rigs in the U.S., and all are contracted. Over the past five years, these mobile, medium depth rigs have operated at 95% activity and with the best land rig margins in the Company.

Helmerich & Payne, Inc. (NYSE:HP) is an energy-oriented company engaged in contract drilling and oil and gas exploration and production. Its contract drilling subsidiary owns 38 land rigs and 10 offshore platform rigs in the U.S., and 41 land rigs in South America. The Company also holds substantial equity investments in several other publicly owned corporations.

The information contained within this announcement is forward looking and involves risks and uncertainties that could significantly impact expected results. A discussion of these risks and uncertainties is contained in the Company's Form 10-K filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Dec. 31, 1999.

Slider,
So far I have a little help from the NDX for the Hummer portfolio, VBG, seeing as I am short, but might not be tomorrow, thinking of cashing it out as NDX approaches support. Though there is sure a heck of a lot of red and yellow in those techie and computer stocks headers on securitytrader. Of course most folks thought I was nutty for shorting it last week, but now its just spending money for oils, VBG.

I'm salivating over FLC...
Still have UPR

Gold quiet before the storm,

Best Regards,

Roebear
