eLMER re...<<<<Would Q4 have been profitable were it not for Flash and Communications divisions contributions? >>>>>>>>>>

ELMER isn't that AMD's one great strength which Intel doesn't have, which is another division to carry the load for processor division if Intel decides to wage another price war, like your buddy Kumar is hinting. Not only is AMD able to ship 850 mhz to 1 ghz chips in quantity, AMD also has the best flash and FASL is the worlds largest producer of flash. Also, for most companies, downsizing and getting focused, usually helps the bottom line. Intel is still buying Internet companies; diversifying and trying to get out (Willy notwithstanding) of x-86 market. If Willy proves to be as great of a success as Itanium; Intel will be down to renting its office bldg. also.

Re: "What's that mean? Intel is using profits from other parts of its business operations to offset losses with X-Box. Unfortunately for AMD, it doesn't have that kind of financial maneuverability"

And AMD used the profits and outright sale of other divisions (and headquarters building) to fund the money losing processor division for years. Would Q4 have been profitable were it not for Flash and Communications divisions contributions? I see that as usual, if AMD does it it's fine but if Intel does it it's cheating.

EP,

As always you intentionally miss the point so you can pull out your old and rather worn violin. My post was intended to rebuke your argument that Intel is able to successfully lower production costs in order to make the X-Box work while AMD is not.

AMD does not have the luxury of diluting its X-Box losses with profits from other divisions. Lowering production costs had nothing to do with Intel undermining AMD's bid.

Once again, we agree.
