Hi Juliet,

I really enjoyed your post. I think your dad did you a backhanded favor.....sorta like being thrown into the deep end of the pool for your first swimming lesson.<vbg>

I like the portfolio that you have devised and think you are wise to "leg in" to your positions incrementally. I doubt that there is hardly a person reading this thread that hasn't "timed" a purchase poorly, but not everyone takes the bull by the horns like you did to repair the damage.

BTW, I was recently visiting in LA and also spent time on the Promenade. There's a really nice Mexican restaurant the next street over. Can't remember the name right now, but the food was great! <edit> La Serenata was the name,I think...... Again, enjoyed your post and thank you for sharing your story.

*OT*

IMHO, its a lot easier to time a "buy", than to time a "sell", especially if what u're thinking of selling is "making a modest profit".

anyone got some 'practical rules-of-thumb' on this ?

cheers, kumar

Juliet,

I have (with my husband) a small "high-tech" company that actually uses some of the more obscure products these companies produce. (BTW, I found TFM also amazing from a business strategy perspective)

Moore's two books, Crossing the Chasm and Inside the Tornado, are written specifically for managers of high-tech businesses. They are must-reads for you.

I'm sure that you realize by now of the serious mistake you made regarding your father. You should NEVER have loaned him your manual. :) Now go out and buy another copy for yourself. The likelihood of getting your original copy back is small if your father is as smart as he appears to be.

Juliet,

very savvy post--and strategy--for a supposed newbie... :0)

go easy on your Dad--I bought more Q myself at 160 in early January on what was, then, a seemingly attractive "dip" from the previous week. I have every confidence that those shares will be substantially higher not too many months down the road...

In general, and this is what we were talking about last night a bit, I think you'll find that the really painful thing is not a drop per se, but being underwater. But since drops occur on a regular basis and no one seems able to time entries accurately, there's always a decent chance that you'll spend a bit of time glub-glubbing with even the best of the gorillas. unclewest said the other day that every single stock he had ever bought had dropped below his purchase price at some point after he bought it; the key is to pick well and know why you are getting in, so that you have the confidence and patience to let excellent fundamentals find their reflection in the stock price.

We've all gotten bit a little bit by the momo bug recently, but in anything approaching a longer run it will almost certainly be the tortoises--like Bruce Brown and Mike Buckley--who will trounce the hares...

good luck,

tekboy/Ares@glubglubglubwithmyLHSPcalls.com

Juliet, what a smart person you are! You have played the game better than any of us. Great portfolio!

Suggest you read "Crossing the Chasm" and "Inside the Tornado" to help you with your business, btw.

Thanks for posting. Keep in touch.

Galahad

Hi, Juliet! What a delightful first post. In the best tradition of this thread, it contained information to allow someone else to benefit from your experience.

>> on 12/31/99 my Dear Old Dad instantly put EVERY SINGLE NICKEL I HAD TRUSTED HIM WITH INTO QUALCOMM!! At 160. :-( Needless to say (and having read about tulips), I thought he was insane.

All daughters think that about their dads; well, at least mine does <lol>.

>> from G&K I found... sanity.

Surely not from any of the elders' posts.

>> I don't think I'm quite ready to develop a "Project Hunt" analysis yet--must read TRFM again (when Dad gives it back) and get that dang-darned lingo down.

Juliet, you're wrong. There is no faster way to pick up the lingo than by doing a Project Hunt. I'm sure Thucydidies already has you on his recruiting list <vbg>.

Welcome to G&K and thanks for a post that gave me some smiles.
