The MSFT threat really brought the stock to a halt and yet they do not seem so powerful anymore, despite what the FM says about gorillas encroaching on a prince's space.

the Linux threat seems to be real and is a source of genuine concern

I think a year from now you will say the same thing about Linux that you are saying about MSFT.

But making it to market and tornadoing are two seperate things. I think we are seeing it happen with I20, I am glad to say.
I think TMS is also in the tornado.

I have always wondered why Wind did not promote itself to the consumer as the OS for all things embedded and use the GUI interface from zinc they purchased along with Oracle spin-off property to make a connection with the end-user, thereby becoming synonymous with the widespread consumer apps such as PDAs, cell phone and MP3. I think they could have out Palmed 3Com but they have been content to remain behind the scenes.
The vision of Wind is much different than the vision of MSFT. Wind believes that Sony will want to sell a Sony HDTV and Panasonic will want to sell a Panasonic HDTV, and that neither of them have much interest in selling a MSFT or WIND tv. In the PC era, standardization was the operative theme, and it was hugely successful. The post PC era will be all about customization, and it is features that will differentiate products.
Having said that, I wish they would do more to educate the public/Wall Street about the products they are in. A stronger stock price would help them in their acquisitions.

Hi Voop!

"Why can't the IR dept put out 8 press releases a day trumpeting the myriad of developments into which Wind has its tentacles?"

I talked to WIND IR about this issue a couple of weeks ago and De Anna's answer was that many of WIND's customers are not keen on promoting their use of WIND to the public. Hence, WIND will not provide interested investors with an easily accessible list of products involving WIND integration.

As you know, Peter Church maintains a very good WIND reference library where interested investors can read about numerous WIND developments with other companies at: Subject 31747

WIND is presenting at a CSFB conference in San Francisco Monday. I expect to see a reiteration of the current Strong Buys from the Street and possibly some other moving news from the conference.

Cheers, Huey

re: Why can't the IR dept put out 8 press releases a day trumpeting the myriad of developments into which Wind has its tentacles? In other words, take advantage of its pervasiveness.

Hi Voop! Perhaps WIND has loosened the chains on its PR department. In the past few weeks there has been numerous WIND press releases with some major ones related to SONY, PALM, TEXAS INSRTRUMENTS--DSP and the use of WIND RTOS in human genome decoding work. (I probably missed some (grin)). Today we have an announcement for a strategic partnership with Erickson and Bluetooth connectivity. Are the pins dropping faster now, or is it just my imagination?

Partnership between initiator of Bluetooth Wireless Technology and embedded technology leader enables cutting-edge smart devices.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 19, 2000-- Today, Ericsson Mobile Communications AB (NASDAQ:ERICY - news) and Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND - news) announced an agreement to integrate Bluetooth wireless technology from Ericsson into Wind River's marketshare-leading embedded development software.

This agreement enables leading-edge consumer original equipment manufacturers to easily leverage Ericsson's pioneering Bluetooth development efforts within their own embedded applications. Smart devices that will benefit from Bluetooth(TM) include mobile phones, Internet appliances, digital still cameras, medical monitoring devices, and car information systems.

Bluetooth wireless technology is a universal, short-range personal area networking radio technology that can be used to provide wireless connectivity for voice, data and multi-media applications. Bluetooth devices are expected to begin shipping in volume by late 2000, and estimates of sales volumes range from 700 million units (IDC) to as high as 2.1 billion units by 2005 (Merrill Lynch).

Over 2000 adopter companies have joined the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) to develop and sell Bluetooth devices, making Bluetooth wireless technology the fastest growing de facto communication standard ever. Ericsson is one of the nine Bluetooth Promoters in the Bluetooth SIG and has built up an undisputed expertise in the Bluetooth implementation and licensed its complete Bluetooth wireless technology to a number of leading companies worldwide.

The Bluetooth HOST Stack and related development tools for testing and verification from Ericsson will be integrated with Wind River's operating systems and Tornado integrated development environment. The Bluetooth HOST Stack from Ericsson has been qualified according to the Bluetooth Qualification Program, which ensures that the product complies with the Bluetooth specification. Wind River will market the Bluetooth HOST Stack and development tools from Ericsson as part of complete solutions from Wind River to begin shipping within the next three months.

``Wind River sees innovative new technologies such as Bluetooth wireless technology integral to our rapidly broadening connectivity strategy for consumer devices,'' said JC Sarner, vice president and general manager of Wind River's Consumer business unit. ``Ericsson is the leading supplier of Bluetooth wireless technology and because of the pre-integrated components resulting from this agreement, customers will find creating cutting-edge Bluetooth applications much easier so that they can bring products to market faster.''

``This partnership will significantly accelerate the number of devices using Bluetooth wireless technology,'' said Jan Ahrenbring, Vice President, Marketing and Communications at Ericsson Mobile Communications. ``Consumers will also get the added benefit of reliable, scalable devices built with the embedded technology from Wind River and its huge number of WindLink® partners who have compatible technology. Ericsson chose to work with Wind River because of its leading position in the embedded market.''

Ericsson is the leading communications supplier, combining innovation in mobility and Internet in creating the new era of Mobile Internet. Ericsson provides total solutions covering everything from systems and applications to mobile phones and other communications tools. With more than 100,000 employees in 140 countries, Ericsson simplifies communications for customers all over the world.
