Andy, excellent description. thanks for the data. Can you make a case for no market for AVNX's other products in the pipeline as well? tp

andy, regarding ur last reply regarding AVNX's dispersion compensator, i do agree with u...GLW's new fiber does negate the importance of AVNX's product...ya see, when u post like an adult regarding technical manners, people welcome ur thoughts here...its only when u become childish that we all, by human nature, have to resort to unproductive tactics...but one thing to rmeember, AVNX has 5 different products either shipping or being beta tested...as a trader, it wouldnt be smart to count them out...if u look at JNPR or SCMR and dissect their products, we could easily find faults there too.

I think your analysis of AVNX's optical processor's competitive position relative to advances in relegating optical dispersion to higher wavelengths of light overlooks a fundamental aspect of the market. If you completely discount AVNX's ability to advance its optical processor line to keep up with the market for leading edge fiber, there is still a huge installed base of older fiber network that will not become upgraded overnight that would benefit from the product AVNX currently has on the market. It is much more economical and practical and realistic for a company like WCOM just to purchase AVNX's processors and install them in the gigantic network of older fiber already in existence than to replace of the existing cable with Corning's new cable that, in the great scheme of things, is only a very minor advance. Of course these networks will be upgraded or replaced but the process will be evolutionary and take place over the next decade. AVNX is the only company that has a product that can be added to the existing infrastructure to address wavelength dispersion. This business opportunity will be ongoing for some years.

What is AVNX'S OPTICAL PROCESSOR? It is actually an Optical Dispersion Compensation Device. Most people like LU and NT do not call it OPTICAL PROCESSOR. But AVNX's got a good name.

Andy,

You are absolutely right. It is a good name; it was very clever, brazen and aggressive marketing on their part to lay claim to the term "optical processor" in describing their product. They've taken a term which rightfully refers to the next generation of silicon chip which will process light instead of electricity. Which, by the way, no what has yet been able to do. Avanex does not even come close to this. It is the ultimate of all holy grails and any company who can even come close to it will be the next Intel. In my opinion, Avanex has incorrectly, and deceptively claimed the term for their product; they have misled, in that, they have implied that they are in this space. They are not. Furthermore, adding insult to injury, they imply that they are the only ones who do what they do: photonicresources.com
