Re JDSU and lack of talent

I've heard it said that a company can be the smartest in the world, but it can't be smarter than all the other companies in the world.

And, that is a huge distinction. With all the excellent optical engineering programs out there, and all the very bright people, you don't really think that one company can gain a monopoly on all the talent?

That is like saying that Oracle can gain a monopoly on all the talented database developers. They may employ all the best for awhile, but eventually a Tom Siebel will decide he's had enough and wants to run his own show. The protection for a Gorilla is its proprietary technology.

Best,
John

Frenchie, JDSU does not own talent. In fact, that talent has ownership of JDSU. That talent can leave anytime. In fact, if that is JDSU's main BTE, there is big trouble ahead.

One of the big problems that tech companies have is as their talent becomes vested and rich, they leave. Some retire, some start new companies, some become key talent for competitors.

Greg - your remark about talent being short in the fiber optic department. Very, very true. I've heard this over and over from folks that work at NT, JDSU etc.. Hard to find good people. Now for the 'good' part. KK has repeatedly said that JDSU has more fiber optic PhD?s - by far - than any other company in the world. JDSU has made a concentrated effort, starting a few years back, to corral as much of the top talent as they can. They pump huge amounts of $$ into R&D. And yes, with the addition of OCLI, ETEK and others to the mix they are 'inheriting' their talent as well. Can that talent leave? Of course. Many times though research type folks like to get 'cozy' and have tons of fun at their work. As long as they are well paid (think of the $ they've made on JDSU stock options!) they tend to stay. There are a few that are always looking for the 'next great thing' but many are like my brother. They are far more interested in what's new and exciting they are working on than they are walking down the street to peddle their wares to someone else. Keep the talent happy, working on new and interested 'fun' things, and well paid and a goodly percentage of them will stick around. A FAR better position to be in than having to start from ground zero and lure the talent to your new up and coming co.
