I'd appreciate any input on the following...

A family member recently invested some money in the Fidelity Biotech fund. The cap gains distribution for that fund is April. I told him to get out of the fund before the distribution since it has gone up significantly this year and he would get hit with the full cap gains for only being in the fund a couple of weeks and actually losing money I think. He is questioning whether it is better to take the cap gains to receive the additional shares.

Could anyone tell me how the additional shares are related to the cap gains, and what is the better move for him?

Thanks for your help.

Judith

Julius, I don't care who you are, star stock pickers don't come along every day. This trend is actually more troubling to me than market turbulence.

Julius:

I've just about lost my stomach for the sectors; the moves up and down are too extreme. I always loved roller coasters, but this is too much.
I don't know about the rest of this board but I can't trust one or two day moves anymore. Watching it by the day is a wrenching experience I think. Somebody told me just now, the 22nd, that the techs are back and I reacted badly, my first thought being: maybe I should be getting out while the gettings good?
Maybe Fidelity's managers are moving on just to get a rest.
