I cannot disagree. I find many Greek and Roman writers much more to my taste than anything else until the 18th and 19th Century. That's quite a long stretch to wait before finding really congenial ideas. I'm glad I missed the dark ages, in Ireland or elsewhere. And the Renaissance wasn't all that great either, from my point of view- nowhere near liberal enough.

I'd never connected the Renaissance to scholars fleeing the fall of the Byzantine empire, though it sounds plausible. Do you know of any sources without going to any trouble?
