He was interviewed on 60 Minutes saying the same. He was juxtaposed to a woman who had been fighting the Love Canal battle for years before Gore got involved. She was amused at Gore's revision of history. She said he came in at the last minute after they had already secured the votes for the cleanup funds.

He's being moronically literal. No Gore did not claim to take a shovel there, dig into the ground, and go "PEEUUUUU!!" He did indeed claim to have brought the discovery to national attention and to have held the first Senate hearings. This was a lie. The assumption that it needed to be "discovered" is also inaccurate. Hooker did not surreptitiously dump this waste. It was done openly and everyone in the area knew about it ( this in no way excuses this horrendous desecration of the land ). When the local authorities approved a development in the area, the successor company to Hooker pleaded with then not to allow it since it was not safe. The local government irresponsibly allowed it to be built anyway.
