THE VISIT OF CHINESE MINISTER, WU JICHUAN

Italian technology, Chinese market and production: this was the proposal made by the Telit Group to the Chinese Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications, Wu Jichuan, during his recent visit to Telit in Trieste, accompanied by numerous high-ranking government officials.

During the important meeting, following a presentation of Telital Group's potential and of its strong commitment to research and development, concrete possibilities for collaboration were examined, specially as regards satellite
technologies for the Globalstar service and the development of digital cellular telephony towards the forthcoming "third generation" and the future UMTS standard.
In confirming that Telit's technologies and products were of interest to the Chinese market, and with a view to setting up a complementary collaborative relationship, Minister Wu Jichuan expressed the interest of the Chinese government in exploring further the subjects to be examined in a future technical meeting to be held in Beijing at the end of the year, thanks in part to the strengthening of the two Telital Group companies already operating in China.

With this in mind, the Minister stressed the need for cooperation regarding technology and, in expressing his appreciation of the mission and the structure of our
Group, he also proposed that relations be opened with the Chinese government, and in particular with the Department of Science and Technology in his Ministry.

Another challenge for Globalstar in Asia?

Ericsson makes first call over the ACeS network using world's smallest satellite/GSM phone

- Ericsson announces the R190 satellite/GSM dual mode phone for Asian Cellular Satellite (ACeS) network

Ericsson today announced the R190, the world's smallest and lightest satellite/GSM dual mode phone specially designed to work with the ACeS regional geostationary satellite, deployed over the Asia Pacific region. Calls have been placed successfully across the network using the Ericsson
R190.

Equivalent to a standard GSM phone in design, size and weighing just over 200 grams, the Ericsson R190 phone represents a leap forward for satellite handsets. Ericsson expects to launch the R190 during the second half of 2000.

The Ericsson R190 is capable of operating in both satellite and GSM 900 modes. Once out of cellular range, the phone automatically switches to satellite mode to send or receive calls making it the ideal phone for users travelling to remote areas beyond cellular coverage.

"The development of a satellite handset of comparable size of a cellular phone represents a significant step forward for satellite communications and makes it more attractive for subscribers, " said Jan Ahrenbring, Vice president, Marketing and Communications at Ericsson Mobile Communications. "With the dual mode Ericsson R190, subscribers in the Asia-Pacific region can benefit from extended mobile connectivity as a result of the
complementary nature of satellite and GSM systems."

The phone is targeted at users who require extended connectivity to be able to call wherever they are in the Asia-Pacific region. ACeS subscribers travelling outside satellite coverage will be able to roam GSM
networks worldwide.

"We're pleased to have Ericsson on board as supplier of phones for the ACeS network," said Adi Adiwoso, CEO and President of AceS. "The launch of the ACeS services, combined with the announcement of the Ericsson R190
dual mode phone gives subscribers total coverage of Asia Pacific in addition to roaming capabilities on GSM networks around the world."

The Ericsson R190's small size is enabled by GMSS, which is derived from the popular GSM standard and exploits the filters, mixers and RF base band components already present in a GSM handset. Subscribers are able to roam on GSM networks and remain in communication should they move out of
coverage area by switching to satellite mode.

The Ericsson R190 functions in four modes: GSM preferred - searches first for a GSM network and switches to satellite if one isn't found, GSM only - searches only for a GSM network, satellite preferred - searches first for the satellite network and switches to GSM if it is not found, and satellite only - searches only for the satellite network. The phone is complemented by a range of useful accessories that will simplify and help usage in different situations.

Note to Editors
Geostationary Mobile Satellite Standard (GMSS) is a satellite air interface developed from GSM. The standard is a result of collaboration between ACeS, Ericsson and Lockheed Martin. Mobile phones users are able to make calls via satellite systems in any country where GMSS is offered.
In order to convert the handset for GMSS modifications are made in specific areas only. The GSM signal is adapted to allow dual mode functionality enabling users to continue to benefit from the on-going development of services for GSM.

Maurice, keep in mind that Ericsson has every incentive to promote ACeS R190 sales in Asia over GlobalStar R290 sales. In the ACeS deal Ericcson shares in revenue after 200 million paid minutes in the first year starting at $0.01 per minute and rising to $0.02/$0.03 per minute. A don't believe they share in Globalstar revenue after the handset sale.
