BGR,

Could very well be. Perhaps there was a period where rent increases far outstripped increases in housing prices. We may have gone through an adjustment in the other direction.

When I bought my residence (2 bedroom coop in Queens) it would cost $700 to rent. Right now it would cost $1100 to rent. The price is about 20% above what I paid for it. In hindsight, I probably overpaid a tad, but in recent years there has been an adjustment. In the last 2 years, the appreciation has been faster than the rent increases.

My only point is that there is some leveling effect between the two over time and I think it is worth looking at both to get a better guage on inflation.
