Sorry if I sounded like a JD. Ad hominems won't make your original post right, mind you. As for the CPI, the constituents and their relative movements of late are not secret. Shelter costs (explicit and implicit rents) make up the bulk (ca. 40%) of your new-economy "core CPI". See stats.bls.gov and stats.bls.gov. Now as to why shelter costs went up so little in 1999 (compared with my experience, certainly), I can't say. -mb
