It could be argued that raising the margin requirement would provide some stability to the market, as the moves down would not be exacerbated by margin calls.

Can the FED reign in the hedge funds? I think their margin problems are worse than a lot of small investors in hundreds of scattered stocks. I think the idea of secret funds who have borrowed enough to start a domino of failed banks is a bigger problem than Vector Vest.
