I had to laugh at the tick or canker. Though I'm sure some women do feel that way, and it's not funny then. There was someone who posted about pregnancy being a "natural condition" for women, as if we were brood mares, and I feel sure it wasn't you. I remember thinking WHO IS THIS GUY! WHich I wouldn't have thought, becuase if it were you, I would have known you. I do remember someone responded to it about mutual benefits- that must have been you and to which I had the more reasonable response of considering whether I thought CW was a parasite or whatever the other thing is called. The maternal glow is probably the huge early hormone surges and the increased temperature. I don't know that it's really a health thing. I too, have a glow, only now it's hot flashes. (Are you going to ask me to leave your table because of sudden unbecoming and offensive sweating?) (JUST KIDDING-- THAT"S RAMBIHUMOR, which a lot of people don't appreciate here.) Although if I dripped on your prime rib, that would be intrusive. However, when dealing with menopausal women, caution is advisable. We have been known to react violently when confronted with reminders that we are getting old. You'll have to find those benefits for me... honestly, I can't remember them. The negatives are still around even twenty years later. And I think nursing has some cancer prevention side effects. Of course EMOTIONALLY, pregnancy was wonderful most of the time, but then, I really WANTED my children, and I didn't have to work, and I had a great deal of support from all the family. I bet if you;re young and alone and waitressing and your life feels over, you don't enjoy it as much. Also, afterwards, even though I had wanted the baby, I found myself with some minor postpartum depression where I wept uncontrollably and told Dan I had ruined our lives forever. I don't think women are made sufficiently aware of the terrible effects of the hormonal readjustments of post pregnancy. Or menopause. They can be frightening and completely out of control. So while I think pregnancy is "natural" in the same way some species give birth and then die, or mate and then eat their partners, I don't know if I want to go so far as to say it's terribly beneficial to the mother. It just- is what it is.
